Marigold Project
Open invitation to TX and Neighboring School Districts:
On August 3rd, 2019, our El Paso, Texas community suffered a tragedy that took the lives of 22 people and left 24 more injured. As an Art Educator of Texas, we are heartbroken and devastated from this attack on border community. As a response to this tragedy, our El Paso ISD Art department was contacted by Ariel Kellogg Texas Art Educator from Bryan ISD, who felt the calling to reach out to us and organize a state wide project to support our city. As Ariel states, "We want to help gather our arms around the El Paso community as well as our Hispanic/Latin communities within Texas". The purpose of this project is to honor our fallen victims and create artworks of love, more specifically Marigolds. The Marigold flower, also known as Cempazuchitl, in Latin cultures is a traditional flower known for its scent and color, used to lay down upon graves or around ofrendas; especially during Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead. The belief is that the flower helps guide spirits on their way back home to celebrate with their loved ones on the Día de Muertos. The focus of this state wide project, is to send "Marigold" artworks from other school districts across our state of TX, as we collaborate and create a city wide art installation of Marigolds to honor our loved ones. Please share this event with others, so that we may help our students/communities emotionally process this tragic events using the symbol of the Marigold as our focus. Please mail or drop off your donated artwork no later than September 20th to the El Paso ISD Fine Arts Office, located at 4864 Doniphan Dr. El Paso, TX 79922. For additional information you may email Rosa Aguilar at [email protected] or click on the following link to add your school/district to our sign up list.
